1952:Dave Garroway hosts the debut episode of NBC’s Today show. In the news: a story about inflammable explosive sweaters.

1954: Marilyn Monroe marries Joe DiMaggio in San Francisco. Asked afterward how many children they want, Monroe says six; DiMaggio replies, “At least one.”

1963: George Wallace becomes Alabama’s governor, vowing “segregation today, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever.”
