TODAY IN HISTORY

1945: Col. Paul Tibbets pilots the B-29 Enola Gay, which drops the first atomic weapon to be used in warfare on Hiroshima, Japan. More than 140,000 people are killed.

1995: Chinese and Korean survivors are invited for the first time to join an estimated 50,000 people at Hiroshima Peace Park, marking the bombing’s 50th anniversary.
