THE LOWLY PENNY

About a thousand pennies are made per second — 5.4 billion
last year, about half the coins minted.

A penny weighs less than nine-hundredths of an ounce.
Pennies generally last 25 to 30 years.

The Lincoln penny was the first cent to carry the words,
“In God We Trust.”

The Lincoln Memorial replaced wheat shocks on the back in
1959 — for Abe’s 150th birthday — making Lincoln the only
person to appear on both sides of a U.S. coin.

Zinc-coated steel pennies were made in 1943 to save on
copper during World War II.

Each penny costs an estimated 1.4 cents for the U.S. Mint
to produce - more than it's worth!
