1944: Hours after Anne Frank and her family are taken from their hiding place, Miep Gies discovers the 15-year-old’s diary.

1964: The bodies of civil rights activists Michael Schwerner, Andrew Goodman and James Chaney are found buried in a half-finished dam in Philadelphia, Miss., after a six-week search by FBI agents.

1968: Steppenwolf plays “Born to Be Wild”—perhaps the first heavy metal song—at the Newport Pop Festival.
