TODAY IN HISTORY

1925: A Tennessee jury finds John T. Scopes guilty of violating a state law against teaching evolution. Both the ACLU and William Jennings Bryan offer to pay his $100 fine.

1861: Confederate Gen. Thomas Jackson gets the nickname “Stonewall” during the first Battle of Bull Run when a Union general says, “There stands Jackson like a stone wall!”

1976: A deadly disease breaks out at a meeting of WWII legionnaires. It becomes known as Legionnaires’ disease.
