1955:Art Linkletter, Bob Cummings and Ronald Reagan help Walt Disney host the opening day of his Disneyland theme park in Anaheim, Calif.

1967: John Coltrane, jazz saxophonist and musical pioneer, dies of liver cancer. He was 40 years old.

1997: F.W. Woolworth announces the closure of its last 400 five-and-dime stores, ending a 117-year run of yesteryear’s Wal-Mart.
