TODAY IN HISTORY

1985: Christa McAuliffe of Concord, N.H., is chosen to be the first teacher in space. She will join six astronauts on the tragic launch of the space shuttle Challenger.

1980: Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev leads opening ceremonies for the Moscow Summer Olympics. Only 80 countries participate after a U.S.-led boycott.
