SEPTEMBER 7
1986:Nobel Peace Prize winner and anti-apartheid advocate Desmond Tutu is named the first black archbishop of Cape Town and leader of the Anglican Church in Southern Africa.

1977: President Jimmy Carter and Gen. Omar Torrijos of Panama sign an agreement relinquishing American control of the Panama Canal, effective Dec. 31, 1999.

1996: Rappers Tupac Shakur and Marion "Suge" Knight are wounded in a drive-by shooting, after leaving a Mike Tyson and Bruce Seldon prizefight in Las Vegas. Knight escapes with minor injuries, but Shakur dies six days later at age 25. Many believe the shooting to be motivated by an East Coast/West Coast rap feud.
