1935:Driving a 2,500 horsepower Rolls-Royce Blue Bird, Sir Malcolm Campbell becomes the first individual to drive an automobile over 300 mph. He averages 301.129 miles per hour at Utah's Bonneville Salt Flats.

1939: Two days after Adolf Hitler sends 1.5 million soldiers in a coordinated air and land invasion of Poland, Great Britain and France declare war on Germany to begin World War II.

1989: Chris Evert beats 15-year-old Monica Seles 6-0, 6-2 in Evert's final win at the U.S. Open, the 101st singles match of her U.S. Open career. Two days later, she will be defeated by Zina Garrison.
