SEPTEMBER 2
1993:Vice President Al Gore and Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin announce that former space-race rivals Russia and the U.S. will collaborate in efforts for space exploration, most significantly in the future international space station.

1935: Composer George Gershwin completes the musical score for Porgy and Bess, an opera about African American life in 1920s Charleston, S.C. His work is often recognized as the finest American opera.

1995: Musicians including Bruce Springsteen, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis and John Mellencamp celebrate the opening of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by performing at Cleveland Municipal Stadium.
