1935:British Army Lt. Col. T.E. Lawrence, famously known as Lawrence of Arabia for his role in encouraging the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire during World War I, is killed in a motorcycle accident in Dorset, England. He was 46.

1962: Wearing a sheer dress studded with 2,500 rhinestones, actress Marilyn Monroe sings a famously sexy rendition of “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy during a Democratic Party fundraiser at Madison Square Garden in New York. Sadly, it is one of the screen siren’s last public appearances before her death in August 1962.

1965: The Who guitarist Pete Townshend writes the youth-power anthem “My Generation” on his 20th birthday, allegedly in response to his car being towed at the demand of the Queen Mum.
