1953:Flying a Canadair F-86 Sabre jet, women’s aviation pioneer Jacqueline Cochrane becomes the first female pilot to break the sound barrier at Rogers Dry Lake, Calif.

1991: Helen Sharman becomes the first British astronaut in space, after being selected from a pool of 13,000 applicants to join Project Juno. Sharman, a chemist, will spend almost eight days at the Soviet Union’s Mir space station.

2004: At age 40, Randy Johnson becomes the oldest pitcher in Major League Baseball to throw a perfect game, leading the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 2-0 win over the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field in Atlanta.
