DECEMBER 20
1803:The American flag is raised for the first time in New Orleans, as the Louisiana Purchase becomes official, doubling the size of the United States for a cost of $15 million.

1860: A special convention called by the South Carolina legislature votes 169-0 in favor of secession, making South Carolina the first state to leave the Union in the prelude to the Civil War.

1989: U.S. forces invade Panama to topple the government of military dictator Manuel Noriega, an intervention authorized by President George H.W. Bush and known as Operation Just Cause.
