1843:“God bless us, every one!” Charles Dickens’ novella A Christmas Carol is published in London. By Christmas Eve, 6,000 copies will have been sold.

1732: Under the pen name Richard Saunders, Benjamin Franklin begins publishing Poor Richard’s Almanack, a book of practical information and proverbs. The almanac will be published continuously for the next 25 years, becoming one of the most popular works in colonial America.

1998: President Bill Clinton is impeached by the House of Representatives for obstruction of justice and lying under oath to a federal grand jury. After a five-week trial, the Senate will acquit Clinton on both counts.
