1892:Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky’s classic winter ballet The Nutcracker debuts at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia.

1865: Secretary of State William Seward proclaims that the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ratified by three-quarters of state legislatures earlier that month, has gone into effect, officially ending slavery in the United States.

1898: Count Gaston de Chasseloup-Laubat sets the first recognized land speed record during a competition near Paris, driving a Jeantaud electric car at an average speed of 39.24 miles per hour
