APRIL 3, 1968

Less than 24 hours before his assassination, Martin Luther King Jr. tells striking Memphis sanitation workers: “I’ve been to the mountaintop.”

1948: President Harry Truman approves the Marshall Plan, which will end up sending $12.5 billion to help Europe rebuild.

1996: Police arrest Theodore Kaczynski, better known as the Unabomber. He
is later convicted and given life in prison.
