1945:Beloved war correspondent Ernie Pyle is killed by Japanese machine-gun fire on Ie Island, just west of Okinawa.


1775: The British are coming! Paul Revere takes his midnight ride to Lexington, Mass., to warn of the British army’s advancement.

1999: Hockey legend and all-time leading scorer Wayne Gretzky plays his last game. It’s in Madison Square Garden.
