1980:Eight American soldiers die during a failed attempt to find and free 52 U.S. hostages in Iran.

1800: President John Adams authorizes $5,000 to purchase the first books for the Library of Congress.

1968: Columbia University students take over campus buildings and stay there for a week to protest what they say is the school’s racism and complicity in the Vietnam War.
