IT AIN'T PRETTY, BUT IT SURE DOES WORK

f you're a fan of quick bread recipes and no-knead bread or pizza dough, you spend a good amount of time with your oven. Buy or make an inexpensive oven stick as a convenient tool for pushing and pulling your oven rack.
There's not much to say about the oven stick beyond the obvious. An oven stick is a simple tool with notches for pulling out the oven rack and pushing it back in. You can buy one from somewhere like Amazon for around $4, or you can make one yourself out of a ruler or any similarly sized wooden stick. As great gadget site Cool Tools points out:
Alton Brown calls it an "oven fish" and recommends it in his excellent baking book, I'm Just Here for More Food. He carved his out of a broomstick. If you already have a Carvin' Jack, a cheap wooden ruler would also be a good starting point. Don't dismiss this simple gadget just because it's frequently given away as a promotional item. It's actually useful.
