Lacrosse is probably the only sport whose name has religious significance. when French priest Peirre de Charlevoix saw Algonquin Indians playing their game of baggataway in 1705, he thought that the webbed sticks they used resembled a bishop's cross and called the game lacrosse, which eventually supplanted the Indian name.
