1989:The tanker Exxon Valdez runs aground, leaking 11 million gallons of crude oil into Alaska’s Prince William Sound and killing hundreds of thousands of animals.

1944: Seventy-six Allied prisoners escape the German prison camp Stalag Luft III through a man-made tunnel. The plot is later made into a move: The Great Escape.

1958: Elvis Presley is inducted into the Army.
