1960:Bell Labs scientists Arthur Schawlow and Charles Townes are awarded the first patent for the laser.


1933: President Franklin D. Roosevelt approves the selling of wine and beer containing up to 3.2 percent alcohol.

1956: Martin Luther King Jr. is convicted of organizing an “illegal” bus boycott in Alabama and sentenced to more than 300 days in prison.
