1985:Libby Riddles becomes the first woman to win the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. Her time: 18 days, 20 minutes, 17 seconds.


1852: Harriet Beecher Stowe’s antislavery novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin is published.

1997: The Liggett Group is the first cigarette maker to admit that smoking is hazardous to people’s health. It also admits the industry markets cigarettes to minors.
