1912:Juliette Gordon Low starts the Girl Guides. The organization later becomes the Girl Scouts of America.

1901: Andrew Carnegie donates $5.2 million for the building of 65 New York libraries.

1933: President Franklin Roosevelt delivers the first of many fireside chats with America. He explains his “bank holiday” after a rash of runs on the nation’s banks.
