FEBRUARY 20

1962:John H. Glenn Jr. becomes the first American to orbit the planet, an event that launches him to celebrity status.
 
1983:
Japan launches the Tenma satellite to study x-rays. “Tenma” is Japanese for “Pegasus.”

1986:
The Soviets launch the space station Mir, which means both “peace” and “world” in Russian.
