1885:The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, is published in the U.S.

1930:
Clyde Tombaugh produces images of Planet X, the newest addition to the solar system. Years later in 2006, Pluto will lose its planetary status.

1953:
After the film industry rejects his idea for the first American 3-D movie, Arch Obler sets out to do it himself. His final product, Bwana Devil, premieres this day in New York City. Reviews are lousy, but it sparks a funny glasses viewing craze.

1988:
Anthony M. Kennedy is sworn in as a U.S. Supreme Court justice

2001:
FBI agent Robert Hanssen is arrested attempting to drop off classified information in a Virginia park. He is later convicted of spying for Russia.
