1933:Giuseppe “Joe” Zangara pulls out an $8 pistol and tries to assassinate President-elect Franklin Roosevelt in Miami. He misses, killing Chicago Mayor Anton Cermak instead.

1879:
President Rutherford Hayes approves legislation permitting women to argue cases before the Supreme Court.

1989:
Soviet troops end their nine-year occupation of Afghanistan.
