TODAY IN HISTORY

1956: Dick Clark takes over as host of Bandstand on a Philadelphia TV station. A year later ABC picks it up nationwide and launches American Bandstand.

1896: William Jennings Bryan electrifies the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, vowing: “You shall not crucify mankind upon a cross of gold.” The convention nominates him for president.

1995: The Grateful Dead play their last concert at Soldier Field in Chicago.
