Irene Triplett receives a $73.13 pension payment from the U.S. government each month for her father’s military service—in the Civil War. The 84-year-old is the last child of any Civil War veteran on the benefits rolls. There are still 16 widows and children of veterans of the 1898 Spanish-American War receiving military pensions, and 4,038 widows, sons, and daughters of World War I vets.
