SEPTEMBER 19

1947:Jackie Robinson is given the first-ever Rookie of the Year award by Major League Baseball, after the first baseman breaks the MLB color barrier in his first season with the Brooklyn Dodgers.

1959: The Cold War gets a little bit frostier when Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev is barred from entering Disneyland during a visit to the United States. Khrushchev is visibly upset about missing out on Mickey Mouse and Tomorrowland, although his exclusion from the park is attributed to concerns for the premier's safety amid the large theme-park crowds.

1982: Computer science professor Scott E. Fahlman posts the first documented emoticons (emotion + icons) — the horizontal "smiley" and "frowny" faces — on a department message board at Carnegie Mellon University. Does that make you :-) or :-( ?

1991:German tourists discovered Otzi the Iceman near the border of Austria and Italy

1893:Women in New Zealand are given the right to vote by the Electoral Act of 1893

1950:In Japan, the first electronic computer is created by a team led by Hideo Yamachito.
