gansey
"The original English and Scottish fisherman's gansey was knit in dark blue," said Rosa Meehan, a curator at the National Museum of Ireland.(The sweaters are also known as "gansey jumpers" after the Isle of Guernsey, where they originated.)
Ganseys were often knitted by newly engaged women as betrothal gifts for their men; some sweaters include zigzag patterns meant to represent the ups and downs of married life. The heavy five-ply wool used to knit them is sometimes known as "seamen's iron," since the sweaters serve as armor against the weather.
