PARTY BALLOON ALERT

A global shortage of helium has caused prices for the lighter-than-air element to spike, affecting industries like semiconductor manufacturing, medical imaging technology, and shipbuilding—not to mention children’s party balloons. The U.S. produces three quarters of the world’s helium supply, but private production has stalled over the last decade as the government sells off its massive stockpile.
