AUGUST 23

1861:Socialite Rose O'Neal Greenhow is placed under house arrest in Washington, D.C., by Secret Service head Allan Pinkerton. Among other acts of espionage, Greenhow passed along information to Gen. P.T. Beauregard that helped the Confederates win the First Battle of Bull Run. Greenhow would continue her role as spy from the Old Capitol Prison but would be released in May 1862, becoming a successful Confederate envoy to Europe.

1305: Scottish patriot and military leader William Wallace is gruesomely executed for a conviction of high treason at Smithfield in London.

1979: Aleksandr Godunov of the prestigious Bolshoi Ballet defects to the United States after the company performs in New York City, joining fellow Soviet ballet stars Rudolf Nureyev, Natalia Makarova and Mikhail Baryshnikov, who had all defected in the previous decades.

1962:Satellite Telstar broadcasts first live Europe-US TV show

1939:Shocking the world, Hitler and Stalin sign a non-aggression pact.

1966:The first picture of the Earth from the orbit around moon is taken by Lunar Orbiter 1

1990:Armenia declares its independence from the Soviet Union
