AUGUST 22

1968:Pope Paul VI arrives in Bogota, Colombia, becoming the first pope to visit the predominantly Catholic countries of Latin America.

1922: Irish revolutionary leader Michael Collins, one of the founding politicians of the Irish Republic, is assassinated by anti-treaty IRA members during the Irish Civil War in County Cork, Ireland. Collins was 31.

1989: Texas Rangers pitcher Nolan Ryan, age 42, strikes out Rickey Henderson of the Oakland Athletics, becoming the first and, to date, only Major League Baseball pitcher to record 5,000 career strikeouts. Ryan, who would play 27 seasons and retire with 5,714 strikeouts, is now the president, CEO and co-owner of the Texas Rangers.

1895:Thomas Edison is responsible for a breakthrough when he creates the first sound movies - the movies however are unsynchronized.

1902:The automobile brand, Cadillac Motor Company is founded
