OCTOBER 28
1936:Exactly 50 years after President Grover Cleveland officially unveiled the 151-foot sculpture "Liberty Enlightening the World" — better known as the Statue of Liberty — on Bedloe's Island in New York Harbor, President Franklin D. Roosevelt officiates its rededication. The iconic copper-skinned statue was designed by sculptor Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi and presented as a gift of friendship from France.

1922: Italy's King Victor Emmanuel III transfers power to military-supported Benito Mussolini after the National Fascist Party's march on Rome.

1965: Pope Paul VI promulgates a declaration absolving Jews of the collective guilt for the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
