OCTOBER 21
1959:Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum opens in New York containing a renowned collection of impressionist, modern and contemporary art.

1879: After more than a year of unsuccessful experiments, inventor Thomas Edison tests the first practical electric incandescent light at his Menlo Park, N.J., laboratory, using a carbonized sewing thread as the bulb's filament. The carbon filament bulb lasts for 13.5 hours before burning out and is the first bulb for practical, commercial use.

1997: Elton John's "Candle in the Wind 1997" is declared the best-selling single of all time by the Guinness Book of World Records, having sold 31.8 million copies in the 37 days since its release. The singer's tribute to the late Princess Diana surpasses the previous all-time best seller — Bing Crosby's "White Christmas," which sold 30 million copies worldwide over 55 years.
