TODAY IN HISTORY

OCTOBER 26
1881:Wyatt Earp, his two brothers and "Doc" Holliday face off against the Clanton-McClaury gang in the legendary shootout at the OK Corral, fought over control of the rich silver mining town of Tombstone, Ariz. The 30-second gunfight leaves Billy Clanton and Tom and Frank McLaury dead, yet the Earp brothers and Holliday will be acquitted of murder charges.

1967: U.S. Navy pilot Lt. Cmdr. John McCain is shot down in a Skyhawk dive bomber while flying over Hanoi, North Vietnam. The seriously injured McCain will spend the next 5 1/2 years imprisoned during the Vietnam War, but will go on to enjoy a successful career in national politics. McCain, the Republican nominee for president in 2008, is currently the senior U.S. senator from Arizona.

1970: The first ever "Doonesbury" comic strip is published in 28 newspapers around the country, featuring college jock B.D. and his nerdy roommate, Mike Doonesbury. The author and illustrator is 22-year-old Yale undergraduate Garry Trudeau, who still creates the popular and often topical daily comic.
