OCTOBER 9
2001:Two letters containing deadly anthrax spores are postmarked in Trenton, N.J., and mailed to Sens. Tom Daschle and Patrick Leahy. The anthrax attacks will ultimately kill five people and infect 17 others.

1940: The dome of St. Paul’s Cathedral, an architectural masterpiece designed by Sir Christopher Wren, is hit by an aerial bomb from the German Luftwaffe during an air raid on London. Despite the heavy bombing suffered by London in the Battle of Britain, the cathedral will survive World War II largely intact.

1967: A day after he is captured by CIA-assisted Bolivian soldiers, Argentine doctor-turned-Marxist revolutionary Ernesto “Che” Guevara is executed by Sgt. Mario TerĂ¡n in the village of La Higuera.
