1981:While reviewing a military parade commemorating the 1973 war with
Israel, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, the first Arab leader to
recognize Israel, and 11 other dignitaries are assassinated by Islamic
militants. Sadat is succeeded by his vice president, Hosni Mubarak, who
was wounded during the massacre.
1683: Thirteen Quaker and Mennonite families from Germany
found, in Pennsylvania, the first permanent German settlement in the
Americas, appropriately named Germantown. Oct. 6 is celebrated in the
United States as German-American Day.
1927: "You ain't heard nothing yet, folks!" The musical film The Jazz Singer,
starring Al Jolson, premieres in New York. With 291 words of dialogue —
plus singing — it is the first feature-length motion picture of the
"talkies" era.
