TODAY IN HISTORY

OCTOBER 5
1989:The Dalai Lama, the exiled spiritual and political leader of Tibet, is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to liberate his homeland from China.

1988: After Republican vice presidential candidate Sen. Dan Quayle compares his congressional experience to that of John F. Kennedy during a debate in Omaha, Democratic counterpart Sen. Lloyd Bentsen famously admonishes Quayle: "Senator, I served with Jack Kennedy, I knew Jack Kennedy, Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy." Despite this, the Republican ticket of George Bush and Dan Quayle is elected a month later.

1991: Before Mark Wahlberg was an acclaimed actor and producer, he was Marky Mark. On this day, a shirtless, iron-pumping Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with their single "Good Vibrations."
