1981:Mark David Chapman is sentenced to 20 years to life in prison for the murder of music icon John Lennon on Dec. 8, 1980. Chapman continues to serve time at New York's Attica State Prison.

1989: MLB all-time hits leader Pete Rose is permanently banned from baseball amid allegations that he engaged in illegal gambling on the outcome of games during his stint as manager of the Cincinnati Reds.

1995: Microsoft rolls out a brand-new operating system, Windows 95, with the help of a worldwide marketing campaign that includes purchasing the rights to the Rolling Stones' "Start Me Up" and lighting the Empire State Building to match the Windows 95 logo.
