AUGUST 25
1920:Ethelda Bleibtrey is the first woman to win an Olympic gold medal for the United States, tearing across the pool to victory in the 100-meter freestyle at the Summer Olympic Games in Antwerp, Belgium. Bleibtrey sets a world record with her time of 1 minute 13.6 seconds and wins two other gold medals at the Antwerp Games.

1949: The Anderson family, with patriarch Jim Anderson played by Robert Young, is introduced to radio audiences on Father Knows Best. The popular show airs on NBC Radio until making the switch to television in 1954.

1970: English singer-songwriter Elton John makes his U.S. debut, playing a set at the Troubadour in Los Angeles that includes "Your Song," "Country Comfort," "Honky Tonk Woman" and "Sixty Years On."
