OCTOBER 24
1940:American industrial workers get the protection of a 40-hour work week in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act passed two years earlier.

1901: Annie Edson Taylor, a schoolteacher seeking fame and fortune, becomes the first person to safely travel over Niagara Falls in a barrel when she successfully attempts the terrifying feat on her 63rd birthday.

1945: The United Nations comes into existence with the ratification of the U.N. Charter by five permanent Security Council members and a majority of other signatories. Exactly four years later, the cornerstone will be laid for the U.N. Headquarters in New York City.
