OCTOBER 21
2003:Hours after the Florida legislature passes “Terri’s Law,” Gov. Jeb Bush orders that Terri Schiavo’s feeding tube be reinserted, continuing the right-to-life battle surrounding the fate of the severely brain-damaged woman.

1805: Vice Adm. Horatio Nelson’s British fleet defeats a combined Spanish and French force led by Adm. Pierre Villeneuve at the Battle of Trafalgar off the coast of Spain. Nelson is mortally wounded in the battle, perhaps the greatest naval clash in British history.

1879: Thomas Edison tests the first practical electric incandescent light at his Menlo Park, N.J., laboratory. The carbon filament bulb lasts for 13.5 hours before burning out.
