2003:Six years after her death, Pope John Paul II beatifies Mother Teresa of Calcutta, founder of the Missionaries of Charity, in a ceremony attended by 250,000 pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City. Beatification, which requires evidence of a miracle, brings the Albanian nun one step away from sainthood.

1812: Napoleon Bonaparte’s Grand Armée, a French force of almost 500,000 men, begins its retreat from Moscow after the disastrous invasion of Russia.

2008: Retired Gen. Colin Powell, former secretary of state in the administration of George W. Bush, breaks with the Republican Party to endorse Barack Obama for president during an appearance on NBC’s Meet the Press.
