OCTOBER 18
1968:African American athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos, the respective gold and bronze medalists in the 200-meter dash at the Mexico City Olympics, are suspended by the U.S. Olympic Committee and expelled from the Olympic Village. On the podium two days earlier, Smith and Carlos had each raised a black-gloved fist during the playing of "The Star Spangled Banner" in silent protest against racial discrimination in the United States.

1767:
English surveyors Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon finish marking the boundary between the colonies of Maryland and Pennsylvania, ending years of border disputes between the Calvert and Penn families.

1950:
At age 87, baseball icon Connie Mack retires after 50 years and 7,755 games as the manager of the Philadelphia Athletics
