SEPTEMBER 23
1806:Meriwether Lewis and William Clark bring their expedition back to St. Louis after completing a 28-month journey through the largely unexplored Pacific Northwest.

1846: German astronomer Johann Gottfried Galle and his assistant, Heinrich d’Arrest, discover the eighth planet in the solar system, based on the calculations of French astronomer Urbain Le Verrier. The deep-blue gas giant is named Neptune, after the Roman god of the sea.

1952: Republican vice presidential candidate Richard Nixon delivers his televised “Checkers” speech, denying that he improperly used a political expense fund. Nixon mentions that his family dog, Checkers, is one gift he will not return; his emotional appeal is met with a largely positive response, and Nixon remains on the Republican ticket.
