SEPTEMBER 21
1989:Gen. Colin Powell is unanimously confirmed by the Senate Armed Forces Committee, making him the first African American chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the highest military post in the nation.

1780: American Gen. Benedict Arnold agrees to hand over the fort of West Point in exchange for a high-ranking position in the British army and a substantial sum of money.

1823: According to Joseph Smith, the angel Moroni first appears to the Mormon leader, directing him to the location of the gold plates that he translates as the sacred text of The Book of Mormon.
