TODAY IN HISTORY

SEPTEMBER 22
1975:Sara Jane Moore attempts to assassinate President Gerald Ford at the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco. Vietnam War veteran Oliver Sipple notices Moore pulling a gun and pushes her aside, effectively saving the president’s life. It is the second assassination attempt on Ford in 17 days.

1964: The musical Fiddler on the Roof debuts on Broadway, beginning a run of 3,242 performances.

1980: After weeks of border clashes, all-out war begins when Iraq bombs numerous Iranian targets. The Iran-Iraq War will continue for eight years and claim the lives of as many as 1.5 million people.
