SEPTEMBER 15
1978:Muhammad Ali defeats Leon Spinks in 15 rounds at the Louisiana Superdome to reclaim the world heavyweight boxing championship, becoming the first boxer in history to win the title three times.

1835: English naturalist Charles Darwin, aboard the HMS Beagle, arrives at the Galápagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador, where he will conduct the observations that eventually lead him to the theory of evolution by natural selection.
